Imagineering Detail of the Month — August 2026: The Yeti of Expedition Everest

This month's Imagineering detail is a legend twice over — once for what it was built to be, and once for what it became. It's the Yeti at the heart of Expedition Everest, in the Asia section of Disney's Animal Kingdom.

What it was meant to be

When Expedition Everest opened on April 7, 2006, the Yeti was the crown jewel: at 25 feet tall, it's billed as the largest and most complex Audio-Animatronic Walt Disney Imagineering has ever built. It was designed to lunge and swipe at your coaster train as you raced past — a heart-stopping final scare powered by a massive hydraulic frame anchored deep in the mountain.

What happened

Within the first couple of years, Imagineers discovered the Yeti's sheer force was stressing the structure it was mounted on. Rather than risk long-term damage to the ride, Disney parked the figure in what's called "B-mode": the Yeti stands frozen, lit by a strobe that fakes the illusion of movement. Fans took one look at the strobe-lit giant and gave it a nickname that stuck — the "Disco Yeti."

The Yeti is the rare Disney detail that's become beloved for failing spectacularly — a monument to swinging for the fences, still standing, still frozen mid-swipe.

Where it stands now

As of 2026, the Yeti remains in B-mode — still there, still strobe-lit, still un-fixed after nearly two decades. Every refurbishment brings fresh rumors of a repair, and every reopening proves them wrong. Fixing it properly would mean opening up the mountain, a closure Disney hasn't been willing to take on. So the next time your train crests that final drop, look for the giant shape in the strobe light — you're seeing one of the most ambitious things Imagineering ever attempted, and one of its most famous what-ifs.
