October's park secret is hiding inside Animal Kingdom's biggest icon: the Tree of Life.

The secret

It isn't built like a tree at all. Its core is a steel frame engineered like an offshore oil platform — the kind built to stand in open water against storms — strong enough to hold up 145 feet of "tree" through Florida hurricane winds. Everything you read as bark, roots, and branches is sculpted over that industrial skeleton.

What to look for

Walk the paths that wind around the base and the Discovery Island Trails. Sculpted into the trunk, roots, and branches are 325 animals — some obvious, many you have to hunt for. It's one of the most detailed pieces of theming on property, and almost nobody slows down enough to really see it.

An oil-platform frame, dressed as a 145-foot tree, carved with 325 animals. The most over-engineered sculpture at Walt Disney World.

Why this one for October

Cooler fall weather makes the slow walk around the roots actually pleasant — which is the only way to appreciate this one. Make a game of it: see how many of the 325 animals your group can spot before you give up and head to Pandora.
